Nigoru Hitomi de Nani wo Negau ch 37 part 1

Sorry to say this but, it’s long, so I split it into 2 parts.

37-1. Chapter 37 (Part 1)

Gerard Berger was inside one of the rooms with a strong wall in Sarajevo Fortress, lost in thought.

” ”The Three Heroes” of Craist, are more dangerous than I thought. I didn’t think that the Liguria battalion would be destroyed.”

The most combat-experienced Liguria battalion, which had been honing its fighting skills since the battle with Liberitoa, was one of the most experienced infantry units in the Highserk Empire. It had survived endless battlefields of field battles, siege battles, maneuver warfare, and defensive battles, and was now considered the two wings that supported the direction of the Ferrius front along with the Jaff Cavalry Battalion.

Such an excellent handpiece that was equivalent to gold or even magic silver, was lost. The enemy’s firepower was underestimated, and the instruction to retreat was delayed, resulting in the Liguria Battalion being engaged in close combat with more than double the number of soldiers. Battalion Commander Liguria died and some of the remaining key members were retreated, but their conditions weren’t all perfect and reconstruction of the unit wouldn’t be that easy.

“Even if I activate the trap, there’s no one who can be used as a diversion. As expected, the battalion should be preserved at the rear from the beginning.”

Even if Gerard was praised as a war god, he misread the enemy army and lost one of the battalions equal to the treasure. He couldn’t help but curse his own stupidity.

“This isn’t good. Even if want them to come back, they can’t. It’s too late, but I can’t afford to give up.”

Gerard switched his thoughts. Even if he activated the trap, the enemy couldn’t be driven away if no one could maintain the last U-shaped layer. Assassination of VIPs required a suicide squad of a platoon size, at the very least. Sure it wasn’t impossible, but the outcome wasn’t guaranteed. Sabotage could be carried out, but given the timing of the retreat, this would at best disrupt the sleep of enemy soldiers and cause the loss of some breakfast supplies.

“As per the second plan, I have no choice but to bleed them as much in Sarajevo Fortress and devote the army to delay them with scorched earth tactics in the land of Myard.”

Should this happen, Gerard’s status would be stripped by the Imperial Diet.

“While the empire is being scraped away, perhaps I should shut myself in the countryside? I’m sure I’ll be bored and frustrated to death.”

The question was where the enemy would stop. Certainly, all the countries in the Four-Country Alliance were reputed to be good countries, both internally and externally, but to Gerard that just sounded like a funny story. On the surface, relations might be good, but behind the scenes conflicts had begun, such as the bets on concessions, and fights over leadership and position in the alliance.

“What Myard will do is easy to guess. The problem would be, how far will they go in trying to get their land back?”

Tracing the map with a finger, the old general indulged in thought. He blew out purple smoke and dropped ashes. The window shook slightly as he reached for the lamp to light another cigarette.

“What happened?”

“I will go and check…”

Gerard stopped the attendant from leaving the room.

“No, I’ll check it myself”

Gerard left his room and went to the military room where the staff officers were waiting, with his servant.

“What’s happening?”

Gerard entered the room and stopped the nearest staff officer. The atmosphere in the room made it clear that something unexpected had happened.

“A big explosion occurred at the Ferrius camp on the 3rd layer, and the 6th layer, which is subsequently established as the main camp of the Four-Country Alliance, is also on fire.”

“Fire? Did someone ignite the black water of Liberitoa?”

An infantry battalion was stationed on the last U-shaped layer, but Gerard hadn’t ordered them to do anything during the night. He couldn’t determine if it was an accident or some kind of camouflage.

“Get the whole army ready for battle, including the reserves. Jaff Battalion too.”

“Your Excellency, where are you going!?”

“I need to see from a better place. I’ll go to the ramparts.”

Gerard skipped up the cobblestone stairs two or three steps and ran up to the ramparts. Leaving the stunned guards behind, he entered one of the fortified towers and leaned out of the top arrow slit.

The enemy camps were certainly on fire. The flames also covered a wide area from the 3rd layer to the 6th layer in which the trap was installed. The cries that reached Gerard’s ears through the wind had to be those of the enemy soldiers in the camp. But, there was one thing above all that thrilled Gerard. That was, the blue flame.

“Haha, AHAHAHA!! They’re on fire. That blue flame, it must be 《Demon Fire》. It must be Walm from Duwei’s Squad!!

Said Gerard to the staff officers who caught up with him.

“It’s time for a sortie!! I’ll use the trap. Let’s mobilize the reserves. Tonight, is the decisive battle!!”

“Y-your Excellency!?”

Hitting the shoulders of the stunned staff, Gerard shouted.

“Move, now!! Speed will never betray. What did you all learn at military school? Time will decide everything. So, Run!! Now! RUUNNN!!!”

There was a frenzy on the ramparts. The staff officers rolled down the stairs and sent a messenger to each battalion. The inside of the fortress was as if the microorganisms in a human body were trying to awaken the body.

Walm’s flank hurt, he had been stabbed after all. The feeling in his fingers was fading. As he continued to run, his legs screamed as well. As he lost more and more blood and mana, even his vision began to distort.

The reason why he started such a thing was that he himself, who was so full of himself, with a reason and morality from a modern world, abandoned himself to emotions, the death of his friends made him senselessly scatter death to the surroundings.

I’m sure, they’re laughing from hell.

Walm had no choice but to ridicule himself. A magic-user soldier from the Highserk Empire, who was presumed dead, attacked a sleeping enemy soldier from behind on the eve of the great offensive. Walm, who continued to struggle with pointless actions, couldn’t hear the cheering on the ramparts at this time.

When Walm struck the halberd against a soldier who stood in his way, the soldier collapsed like a broken thread without raising a voice.

Without another glance to the dead, Walm advanced his foot. His goal was to get to a place with plenty of supplies. After all, only things that burned well gathered in the warehouse. Nice fuel for the grand bonfire indeed. Even if the facilities had been robbed, they could still be used. And the Four Country Alliance must have used the existing facilities for convenience.

Two soldiers jumped in. Walm swung his halberd with only the palm of his hand, as he was unable to move his left finger properly, and delivered a killing blow to their throats.

The spearhead of the halberd was dodged, but the left side of the tip of the halberd was an axe, and the right side was a claw-like blade. Even if the soldier dodged the tip, he couldn’t avoid the claw-shaped blade. His throat was cut and immediately, Walm wrapped around the right side of the soldier.

The remaining soldier attempted to rush at Walm with an angry expression, but the moment Walm’s and the dead soldier’s bodies crossed, he stabbed with a small thrust.

The spearhead that protruded from the dying soldier’s back couldn’t be dodged and caused the other soldier to slump from his knees to the ground after a low groan.

Walm kept running with the sound of bubbling water on his back.

In this short period of time, Walm felt his growth. He had a muddy left eye that shouldn’t be able to see anything, but he didn’t feel crippled. Rather, he felt that the six senses were sharpened.

A large number of soldiers stood guard in what looked like a corner of the warehouse. Soldiers from various countries were there.

“Don’t let him step into the warehouse!!”

Shouted one of the soldiers, perhaps to boost morale or to inspire himself, but for Walm it was good news.

“The frequency of him using《Demon Fire》 has decreased. Surround him and exhaust him!!”

There was a soldier who used his head. The idea of the soldier in command was generally correct, but there were still some mistakes. On the way, Walm didn’t use the skill to save his mana, for when he met the “Three Heroes” and the Order of Reharzen. Also, he still had some mana and energy left because he didn’t need to control the skill.

Walm prepared himself and activated 《Demon Fire》. Hot air blew and blue flames overflowed from the body.

Walm was aware that there were no companions or shields to protect, only enemy soldiers to kill. Therefore, he thought it would be more efficient to use the skill indiscriminately in enemy territory than to use it for defense.

“It’s 《Demon Fire》, eeeaaaahhhHH!!”

“Wait. Run ―― aaaaAAAHHH!!”

“Move away!! Keep a distanceeeEEE!!”

The soldier who had seen it even once had given up everything the moment the blue fire came out of the body. Those who had chosen to fight thoroughly and those who reacted too late were all pulled into the sea of blue flames.

Walm walked slowly through it. In the end, neither the “Three Heroes”, who seriously injured Walm and killed his squad, nor the main unit of the Order of Reharzen, appeared in front of him.

Walm didn’t know if the camp was burned down and the influential soldiers and knights were so involved that they couldn’t do a sortie in a short time.

When Walm opened a corner of the burning warehouse, it was a warehouse for provisions. For Walm, who had been in a state of asphyxia and hadn’t eaten anything for nearly a week, the sweet smell flooded through his nasal passages in an instant.

If only there’s no death odor…

“Should I change clothes?”

The bonfire, should be enough for guiding them to hell.

Walm dragged one of the corpses he had killed into the warehouse and took off the equipment. He remembered that he might be quickly exposed if he wore the equipment of the enemy Craist soldiers. Walm decided to go with the Ferrius soldier because he was familiar with their behavior. He was also familiar with the behavior of the Liberitoa soldiers, but he spoke more to the POWs whose homeland was Ferrius. In addition, there was a fact that Ferrius sent out an emergency call, so the army had many militias, that would make him easier to blend as one of them.

Regretfully, he made the dead Ferrius soldier carry his equipment and threw him into a burning warehouse. Walm thought about what to do with the mask, but it vibrated violently, so he gave up throwing it.

It’s basically a harmless living mask, but if I carelessly throw it away, I don’t know what will happen.

Walm put the mask in the bag and moved away from the warehouse with the borrowed equipment, mimicking the injured. After all, Walm was already badly injured himself. He forcibly brought the broken fingers into a good arrangement and suppressed his bleeding wounds by cauterization.

At the moment, Walm looked like a soldier who had been ambushed. He wouldn’t look like a rampaging demon. Sitting in a corner of a clay wall mixed with the dead and seriously wounded people, he became one of the Ferrius soldiers with burns injuries.

“Sh*t, it’s a strong flame, take the seriously injured to the treatment center!!”

“Don’t relax your guard!! The warehouse and the command post have been attacked after all.”

“Come on, stand up, fast, or you’ll get swallowed by the fire.”

One of the Ferrius soldiers grabbed Walm by the shoulder and straightened him up.

“It’s a terrible injury. Let me take you to the treatment center. There’s a lot of security there.”

It was a proposal that Walm couldn’t hope for more than anything. In the area that continued to burn, the search for the user of 《Demon Fire》was still in place, while most of the soldiers kept extinguishing the fire. If he were to be carried as an injured Ferrius soldier, it would be easy for him to heal his injuries and escape.

And so, Walm was dragged to the treatment center.
